ES splits doubleheader with Willard

Colson Moore had the right stuff when he pitched in relief Tuesday night for Excelsior Springs against visiting Willard. Excelsior Springs was leading 12-10 in the top of the seventh inning when Excelsior Springs coach Aaron Holst called on the senior southpaw to close the second game of a varsity baseball doubleheader between two schools nicknamed the Tigers. Willard had no outs and runners on first and second. Moore responded by retiring three straight batters to secure the locals’ two-run victory, retiring the first one on a sacrifice bunt, then recording backto- back strikeouts for the save. The victory put Excelsior Springs at 10-5 overall entering Wednesday’s meeting with visiting Smithville to open Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division play. “I knew they struggled with the breaking ball,” Moore said. “So I went in and commanded that pretty well – and that helped me out a lot.” Moore performed in “typical fashion,” Holst said. “He was an absolute alpha dog…
