Recently, Excelsior Springs hit a rough patch in its varsity volleyball schedule. Before Tuesday’s sweep of Ruskin on the road, the Tigers dropped three of four matches, including two of three last week. That week opened Oct. 3 with a 3-0 road loss to traditional volleyball powerhouse St. Pius X of Kansas City. The Warriors took the first set 25-14, then followed that with wins of 25-12 and 25-14. The Tigers’ win last week was an Oct. 3 road sweep of Winnetonka. Excelsior Springs opened the best-of-five, Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division meeting with a 25-21 victory. The Tigers then squeaked out a secondset victory (25-23) before sealing it by taking the third set 25-19. Excelsior Springs capped the week with a 3-0 Oct. 5 home loss to Kearney. The Tigers opened the Blue Division meeting by going back and forth with the Bulldogs before Kearney pulled away with a 25-21 win.
