Excelsior Springs netters start season with action-packed week

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Tigers had a packed schedule their first week of the varsity girls tennis season. The group played four duals in five days. Excelsior Springs opened Aug. 30 by hosting Missouri River Valley Conference West Division opponent Odessa, falling 8-1. Junior Anna Selby picked up the only win, posting a 6-3 victory in No. 1 singles. Seniors Amanda Mayfield and Kaylie Como dropped their matches from overheating on the court. Junior Emma Kern fell in No. 4 singles 6-3, as did junior Lauren Mueller in the No. 5 spot. Freshman Megan Riegel dropped the No. 6 singles match 6-0. Selby and Mayfield fell in No. 1 doubles 6-3. Como and Kern dropped the No. 2 doubles match 6-2. Mueller and Riegel fell 6-0 in No. 3 doubles. On Aug. 31, the netters visited Harrisonville, where they dropped another MRVC West dual, this time 9-0. Selby dropped a hard-fought match 9-7. Mayfield fell 8-0.
