How far prep girls wrestling has come within the past 20 years! Or even within the past five years!I remember when I interviewed my first high school girls wrestler. It was in the late 2000s or early to mid-2010s and I was on assignment with The Examiner, a newspaper in Jackson County. I was covering a competition at Fort Osage High School. Back then, even the metro area’s large suburban schools didn’t have girls wrestling teams, so the girl I interviewed was wrestling with a boys team (Blue Springs, I think).Jump ahead to this decade. Seemingly, prep girls wrestling teams keep popping up around Missouri, much like girls soccer programs began to blossom during the 1990s and 2000s. So many schools have established girls wrestling programs, in fact, that the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) has created state girls wrestling tournaments.
