Goetz reaches blood round in final competition
Lilly Goetz nearly brought home a state medal to cap her first season of high school girls wrestling.Participating in the Class 1 state tournament, held Feb. 26-27 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, the Excelsior Springs first-year high schooler was one victory shy of reaching the medal round of the double-elimination competition. Per Missouri State High School Activities Association regulations, medals were awarded for the top six finishers in each weight class.Goetz went 2-2 in the 120-pound division to finish her season 38-13. With her opening-round win by pin of St. Clair’s Raleigh Declue, she advanced to the winner’s bracket quarterfinals. A loss by pin to McDonald County’s Anjelika Alarcon sent her to the consolation bracket, also known as wrestlebacks.Goetz pinned St. Genevieve’s Hollyn Zangaro in the second period to win her first match of wrestlebacks.
