Running game key to Tigers’ win over Savannah
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Tigers cooled off Savannah on a hot night for football.
On Aug. 27, playing before a packed home side of Tiger Stadium, Excelsior Springs used a ground-and-pound attack to down the Savages 21-6 in the season opener for both varsity programs.
Possessing the football for more than 30 minutes, the Tigers tallied 345 yards of total offense. All those yards were rushing yards.
Savannah opened the scoring and got its only points on a 21-yard TD run by quarterback Ethan Dudeck with 6 minutes left in the first quarter. Excelsior Springs senior Ayden Dolt intercepted Savannah’s two-point pass attempt.
The Tigers took the lead with 9:16 left in the second quarter, when Dolt took a handoff on the right side of the line and bounced his way to an 8-yard TD run. Sophomore Kylor Meek’s extra-point kick made it 7-6.
