Happy to be a ‘final four’ dad

Many dads dream of their kids following in their footsteps. For five dads with sons on the Excelsior Springs varsity baseball team, that dream has come true. And I’m fortune to be among them. At press time, the Tigers were playing in the final four of the Class 4 state tournament at Sky Bacon Stadium in Ozark. The team includes five players whose dads played in final fours. Those players are Mason Danner, my son; Broc Dusek; Ryne Marcum; Kaelan Bedford; and Cooper Collins. Kevin Dusek, Broc’s dad, and I played on the first two Excelsior Springs teams that advanced to the Class 3A final four in 1995 and 1996. Brennan Bedford, Kaelan’s dad, was a part of the 1995 team. Both teams fell in the semifinals, with the 1995 team losing to Herculaneum at the University of Missouri in Columbia and the 1996 team losing to Helias Catholic, a Jefferson City-based school.
