‘Motivated leaders’ spark ES boys wrestling team

Based on his preseason turnout, Excelsior Springs varsity coach Cody Beck probably won’t have to worry about having open weight classes this boys wrestling season.At press time, there were 37 boys out for wrestling.“We have a great group of motivated leaders in the room and they are pushing one another every day,” Beck said.That “great group” includes 12 boys with varsity experience. Among those dozen grapplers are three returning state medalists: Ryne Marcum, Wyett Shipman and Cooper Collins.Marcum seeks to qualify for state competition for his fourth and final season. The senior, who placed fourth at the Class 2 state tournament at 132 pounds last season, will wrestle at 144 this season.Shipman, also a senior, placed fifth at state at 106.
