Netters fall to Carrollton in districts
Excelsior Springs’ quest for a second straight team district championship in girls tennis fell short.
For the second straight season, the Tigers reached the championship dual of the Class 1 District 14 Tournament. After edging Richmond 5-4 Oct. 2, they fell 5-1 to Carrollton Oct. 4. Excelsior Springs hosted both duals.
Juniors Shelby Stodden and Malaya Tedesco
opened the Richmond dual by taking the No. 1 doubles match 8-1. Junior Megan Riegel and first-year high schooler Laney Smith won the No. 2 doubles match 8-3. Junior Rebecca McDade and Olivia Deere, a first-year high schooler, dropped the third doubles match 8-0.
In singles, Stodden took the No. 1 match 6-0, 6-2; Smith won in the third spot 6-4, 6-0; and Riegel won the No. 4 match 6-4, 6-4.
In the championship dual, Stodden and Tedesco won a back-andforth No. 1 doubles match 9-7, Smith and Riegel fell 8-2 in the second position, and McDade and Deere lost 8-1 in the third spot. Carrollton swept the Nos. 4-6 singles matches to…
