Jacob Schmidt nearly brought home a medal from the Class 4 state boys golf tournament.

Schmidt, who graduated May 10 from Excelsior Springs High School, finished in a three-way tie for 17th out of a field of 90-plus golfers at the May 13-14 tournament at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau. Per Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) regulations, those who placed among the top 15 received a medal, including ties.

Schmidt shot a 158 for the 36-hole competition. He shot a 76 (+4) his opening round, making nine pars and four birdies. He shot an 82 (+10) the second day, making seven pars and two birdies.

Schmidt was one of two golfers representing Excelsior Springs. Lanndon Biermann shot a 170, finishing in a fiveway tie for 54th. Biermann shot an 84 (+12) his opening round, making four pars and three birdies. He shot an 86 (+14) his final round, making four pars and three birdies.
