Soccer squad seeks faster starts after loss to Barstow

For Excelsior Springs coach Brett McKenzie, the Tigers’ 1-0 loss Sept. 13 to The Barstow School continued a concerning trend with his varsity soccer squad.“We’ve kind of been starting a little slow recently,” McKenzie said minutes after his team’s finale in its own tournament. “And that’s something that we’ve got to find a way to fix. We let them have a little too much time on the ball. And we settled in too much defensively, but we still didn’t have that defensive effort, so we made it hard on ourselves in that first half because we invited that pressure from them.”Senior goalkeeper Brett Jones, who unofficially had 12 saves against Barstow, agreed.“We just need to start stronger, because some teams are really going to put us away if we don’t start sooner,” Jones said.The Tigers, however, started fast enough to nearly score in the third minute, courtesy of a corner kick.
