Thoughts of flooded fields and former figure skaters
On the surface, a flooded ballfield and a 2017 movie about a former figure skater might seem to have nothing in common.
For me, however, they do. Both have given me cause to reflect.
The flooded field was the Jim E. Piburn Ballfield in Excelsior Springs. On June 25, while driving west on Missouri Highway 10 to help my priest dry out our church basement following the monsoon that had dropped that morning on the area, I spotted the ballpark out of the side of my eye. It looked like no ballpark.
It looked like a lake.
I was stunned as I took in a field engulfed in water, an obvious result of the downpour and the Fishing River overspilling. It was a disaster area.
For some reason, the image made me think later of my boyhood. I remembered that was the same park where I had seen my brother Berkley play slowpitch softball, only I think it was called it Siloam Park back then. Or at least I heard some people call it that.
