Tigers’ bid for fifth straight title ends with shootout loss
SMITHVILLE – Excelsior Springs coach Brett McKenzie was admittedly spent after the Tigers’ season-ending loss to Maryville in varsity boys soccer.The reason was because of how the Nov. 6 defeat in the Class 2 District 8 Tournament title game at Smithville High School unfolded.Excelsior Springs and Maryville were tied 1-1 when regulation ended, forcing overtime. After two goalless overtime periods, it came down to a shootout. The Spoofhounds (12-3-1) made five shootout kicks to the Tigers’ four, with Maryville’s Daniel Castellon providing punching in the game-winner – and ending Excelsior Springs’ quest for a fifth straight district crown.“It feels like I have played myself,” McKenzie said. “The adrenaline’s going.
