Tigers fall to Smithville in district finals
SMITHVILLE – The Tigers’ 52- 10 season-ending loss to undefeated, top-ranked Smithville did not change Excelsior Springs varsity football coach Mark Faubion’s opinion of his team’s season.
“The season has still been a special one, regardless of what happened here tonight,” Faubion said. “We played a very, very good football team tonight and (the loss) does not diminish the things we did both as a team and as individuals throughout the year.”
Smithville scored on every possession en route to a 52-10 Nov. 12 home win in the Class 4 District 8 championship game. The Warriors also scored by tackling Tigers punter Andrew DeOrnellis in the end zone after a mishandled snap for a safety to go up 2-0 with 9 minutes, 53 seconds left in the first quarter.
