Tigers pile up points, yards in gridiron loss to SJC
The Tigers scored their share of points Oct. 7 against St. Joseph Central, but not enough of them to win.
Excelsior Springs also tallied its share of yards in the 53-47 Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference interdivisional road meeting – 505, to be exact. That total included 432 rushing yards. St. Joe Central and Excelsior Springs combined for 1,100-plus yards of total offense.
Those yards included a 4-yard TD run by St. Joe Central’s Stone Wetlaufer for the opening score. An extra-point kick made it 7-0 Indians with 8 minutes, 44 seconds left in the first quarter.
Excelsior Springs began contributing to the shootout with senior Rakai Gantt’s 5-yard TD run with 3:36 left in the first quarter. Senior Jace Schmitz booted the extra point to tie it.
Gabe Fields’ 5-yard TD run and another extra point with 6 seconds left helped St. Joe Central take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter.
