Tigers qualify for sectionals in 15 events
The track and field season has been extended for another week for Excelsior Springs – at least in 15 events.
The Tigers extended the season in those events by securing top-four finishes May 13 at Class 4 District 8 competition at Winnetonka High School. Those who placed in the top four qualified for Class 4 Sectional 4 competition, slated for Saturday at Warrensburg High School. The top four finishers at sectionals will qualify for the state meet, scheduled for May 26-27 in Jefferson City.
Gavin Wilmes led the Excelsior Springs boys by qualifying in three events – the 110-meter high hurdles, the 300 intermediate hurdles and as part of the 1,600 relay team. The senior won the 300s in 41.22 seconds and placed second in the 110s in 16.04. Wilmes, seniors Rakai Gantt and Braxton Moffett, and junior Luke Davis placed second in the 1,600 relay in a season-best time of 3:31.52.
