Tigers take tournament title to open season

KANSAS CITY – Excelsior Springs already has a varsity boys soccer tournament title and the season is only roughly two weeks old. The Tigers won that title at the Winnetonka Tournament, held Aug. 30-Sept. 1, going 2-0. After receiving a first-round bye, they outlasted Grandview, winning 2-1 in double overtime Aug. 31; then, they downed Fort Osage of Independence 5-2 on Sept. 1 for the title. Sophomore Kolin Kincaid opened the scoring for Excelsior Springs against Grandview, courtesy of an assist by sophomore Jake Zapata. Junior Mason Wartner scored the gamewinner, with the assist coming from senior Carter Pitts. “It wasn’t pretty, but I am proud of the boys for finding a way to win,” coach Zac Ganzer said.
