Tournament title powers girl grapplers through packed week

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The girls in black and gold got off to a winning start last week on the wrestling mats. On Jan. 17, the grappling girls won the Winnetonka Tournament team title, led by individual titles from junior Vada Burton at 130 pounds and sophomore Alyssa Betts at 141. Sophomore Jaylenn Hudlemeyer dropped only one match, to Betts, to finish second at 141. Senior Jacey Brewer took second at 125. Senior Paige Barber finished third at 135. Freshman Izabella Morgan finished fourth. The following night, the girls visited Warrensburg for a triangular, defeating the host school 36-0 and falling to Odessa 36-18. Brewer and Burton picked up wins against Warrensburg. Brewer won by fall in 44 seconds. Burton won by a thirdperiod pin. Brewer, Burton and Barber each won by fall in the dual against Odessa, with Brewer’s coming in the second period, Burton’s in the first and Barber’s in the second.
