Residents urge council to remove Flock cameras

Residents opposed to Excelsior Springs’ Flock cameras recently took their concerns directly to city council, asking members to remove the cameras and end the city’s relationship with Flock.

During public comments, Tracie Hardesty presented a petition she said contained 1,021 signatures from people in Excelsior Springs and surrounding communities, while other residents presented council members with a proposed resolution and ordinance to suspend use of the cameras and prohibit future city use of automated surveillance systems.

Hardesty explained the petition total was reached after paper and online submissions were reviewed to remove duplicates and signatures from outside the area.

She noted the group objects to routinely collecting and storing vehicle-location information for people not suspected of crimes, arguing that a searchable collection of photographs and locations can reveal more about a person’s movements than an individual image.
