Joanne “Jan” Jackson, 95, of Richmond died Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at Oakridge Assisted Living in Richmond.

Jan was born on Dec. 17, 1925, in Richmond, the daughter of Newton Paul and Nina (Clark) Hamacher.  She was united in marriage to James Donald “Don” Jackson of Richmond on Sept. 5, 1948. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2009.

Survivors include: her son, Jim (Kathy) Jackson of Lee’s Summit; daughter-in-law, Kathran Jackson of Liberty; sister-in-law, Judith Blair of Louisville, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Jessica (Ben) Angelette, Rachel (Chad) Fockler, Tyler Jackson, Julie (Dustin) Williams and Jay (Elizabeth) Jackson; 15 great-grandchildren, Jack, Graham, Daphne, Bianca, Quentin Angelette, Carson, Natalie, Elaina Fockler, Alice, Thomas, Charlotte Jackson, Evelyn, Ember, Kaia Williams and Benjamin Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, John Jackson; two daughters, Julie Jackson and Jane Jackson; and a brother, Newton Clark Hamacher.

Jan graduated in 1943 from Richmond High School.  She then attended William Jewell College in Liberty, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English.  After college, she worked at the Ray County Herald newspaper as a reporter for a short time.  Jan taught for a year for the Richmond School District before starting her family.

She was best known, with her husband Don, as owners of Jackson’s Hardware for decades, serving the community and expanding to five stores statewide.  Jan was active in her community, served on many boards and committees, always ready to help when needed.

She was active in the Richmond United Methodist Church in various volunteer and leadership positions.  She was a member of the AAUW Beta Sigma Omicron in Richmond and part of the PTA leadership.

Jan helped organize, campaign and promote the Richmond Swim Club, with the group efforts leading to the construction of a swimming pool.

She helped organize the Senate Bill 40 Committee that worked to pass a levy to establish the sheltered workshop in Richmond in 1980.  Jan was responsible for naming that workshop Ideal Industries and serving on the board of directors for many years.

She was named Pi Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Pi Woman of the Year in 1981.  She served on the Public Relations Committee of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and served as a volunteer in the office in later years.  She was a member and officer of DAR, on the Ray County Museum Board and a member of P.E.O.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Richmond United Methodist Church or the Farris Theatre.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 22, at the Richmond United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.  Inurnment will be in Richmond Memory Gardens.  For those unable to attend services for Jan, services will be posted on the Richmond United Methodist Church’s YouTube page.
