Missouri Department of Transportation policies, at least as evidenced in Ray County, are far less friendly toward the military and veterans than promised in a state where former Gov. Jay Nixon, present Gov. Mike Parson and other political leaders seek to present a friendly face. The reason for wanting to present that friendly face is, the military is a primary engine that moves Missouri’s economy. The latest study, released in August 2020 by the Missouri Department of Economic Development, states the military spends about $18.2 billion annually in this state, accounting for more than $29 billion in economic activity – a big chunk of money in a state having just 6.16 million people. The study found military spending contributes $11 billion to Missouri workers and supports more than 180,000 jobs, or about 7% of the state’s workforce.
