An Excelsior Springs coaching legend has been inducted into another hall of fame.

Vic Bonuchi, a longtime football, wrestling and baseball coach for the Tigers, was recently selected for induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony is slated for April 23 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

It will be Bonuchi’s sixth hall of fame induction. He has been inducted into the Missouri High School Football Coaches, Greater Kansas City Football Coaches, Missouri High School Wrestling Coaches, National Wrestling Coaches and Excelsior Springs High School Athletic halls of fame.

The road to those coaching honors started in 1959, when Bonuchi came to Excelsior Springs as an assistant football coach after a three-sport career at William Jewell College in Liberty. In 1961, he became the school’s head coach and quickly achieved notoriety by leading Excelsior Springs on a 45game winning streak.

Bonuchi’s success led to him leaving for his alma mater to become the defensive coordinator at William Jewell. In 1989, he returned to Excelsior Springs as head coach. His return stint included Class 4A state championships in 1994 and 1996. He retired in 2000 with an overall record of 140-41-6.

Bonuchi’s coaching success went beyond football. In 1961, he started the wrestling program at Excelsior Springs, helping the Tigers to become state champions in the 1970s. In 1991, Bonuchi took over the baseball program and guided the Tigers to four district titles and three trips to the Class 3A state semifinals (1995, 1996, 1999).

Bonuchi achieved those feats while raising a family. In June, he’ll be married to his wife Joann for 65 years. They raised three children in Excelsior Springs.
