County investigative squad examines city jail death

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Benjamin Chase, 21, Excelsior Springs, died while in custody and the death is being reviewed by another law enforcement agency, the Clay County Investigative Squad, Excelsior Springs Police Chief Gregory Dull stated. Dull said he asked for the outside investigation “for transparency and accountability” to the public. Many departments ask for outside reviews of unusual circumstances for the same reasons, he said. “They’ll determine exactly what happened,” Dull said.

Shirley May Warren, 79, of Excelsior Springs, MO passed away May 8, 2022, at home. Mrs. Warren was born Nov. 20, 1942, in Kansas City, MO. 
 
Shirley married Larry Warren on Apr. 5, 1974. She loved her family and would do anything for anyone. She loved dogs, especially Maggie and Racer. Shirley loved the outdoors and being in her yard doing yard work. 
 
She was preceded in death by her mother, Jesse Ruth (Dovenspike) Stephens; father, John; two sisters, Betty Reyburn and Mary Nicholson; and three brothers, John, Roy and Allen Stephens.

On Friday, May 6, 2022, Sonja Joan Manley (Dougherty), loving wife and mother of four, passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by family at the age of 82.  

On Dec. 28, 1939, Sonja was born to John and Goldie Dougherty in Burchard, NE. She met her husband of almost 65 years, Sherman Manley, and they married on April 15, 1958. Together they raised four children: Kent, Kurt, Kathy and Korey.

Velma Frances Clancy, 93, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri passed away April 28, 2022 at Valley Manor. Visitation will be held at 1:00PM on Friday, May 13, 2022 at Hidden Valley Funeral Home of Excelsior Springs with a graveside service at Richmond Memorial Gardens to follow. Mrs. Clancy was born on March 9, 1929 in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Velma very much enjoyed spending time with her family, watching old westerns, listening to old country music, and in her younger days she loved dancing.
