Serena Athamneh “Alexander”, passed away on May 27, 2022, at the Hospice House in North Kansas City, at the age of 67.  

Serena was born in Kansas City, KS on December 6, 1954, to Floyd Alexander and Nellie Alexander.  

Serena is survived by her partner of 20 years, Kelvin Beard of Excelsior Springs.  

Serena went to Excelsior Springs High School. Serena was passionate about cooking, movies, and YouTube. She loved her family and friends.

City council approves outdoor pool dome

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The outdoor pool at the Excelsior Springs Community Center will have a dome to allow swimming during inclement weather. Arizon Structures WorldWide LLC Arizon Structures WorldWide LLC will provide the air-supported dome for $394,538, as approved May 16 by the City Council at the Hall of Waters.
THE OUTSIDE POOL is proposed for the back of the community center.

OHS produces two medalists

JEFFERSON CITY – Orrick sophomores Jonathon Harris and Jaxon Miller “did their school proud” last week at the Class 1 state track and field meet, Bearcats coach Kirk Thacker stated. Harris took third in the boys 110-meter high hurdles and fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles with his times of 16.06 and 42.83 seconds, respectively, at the May 20-21 competition at Jefferson City High School.

Coach leaves Orrick, returns to roots

ORRICK – A major connection to Orrick’s 2020 Class 1 state quarterfinal run, and back-to-back district titles in 2019 and 2020 in boys basketball is gone. Coach Matt Brownsberger announced in April he was leaving Orrick to teach and coach in Warsaw.

Two join city’s Parks, Recreation Board

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Parks and Recreation Board has two new members. On May 16 at the Hall of Waters, the City Council approved Mayor Sharon Powell’s appointments of Sherri Branson-Hurt and retired Excelsior Springs High School coach Terri Irons to the board.

Excelsior Springs council agrees to lease carts for golf course

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – New golf carts are expected at the golf course in roughly five to nine months. Shortly before the City Council approved an agreement May 16 at the Hall of Waters to lease a fleet of Yamaha gas-powered vehicles, Shane Gardner told city leaders the shipment from distributor Masek Golf Car Co.

Edwards finishes ESHS golfing career at state

NEW BLOOMFIELD – An era ended last week for Excelsior Springs boys golf. Senior Ethan Edwards finished his high school career May 16-17 at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in the Class 4 state tournament – his second straight appearance in a state tournament.

State poised to legalize recreational marijuana

Legalizing the recreational use of marijuana appears likely to get on the Missouri ballot in November, and from there, seems destined to become law. The prediction that the issue will reach voters is based on a claim by Legal Missouri 2022, the group pushing the ballot plan.
