FBI KC Division warns of sextortion

Parents, educations, caregivers and children are being warned of the dangers associated with online activity, as it can lead to solicitation and enticement of minors to participate in sexual acts, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Sextortion, according to the FBI’s press release, involves an offender coercing a minor into sending or creating sexually graphic images or videos to an adult. Once the offender receives the explicit imagery from the minor, the victim is then threatened to send more digital material or have the compromising material released. These offenders are seeking sexual gratification. Some instances of sextortion are financially motivated and are constituted as a criminal act involving an offender enticing a minor to send and create explicit material while threatening to release it unless they receive payment.
