Local government and popcornNow that the local election is over and the final votes have been counted, I find myself unwinding in the only way I know how – by binge-watching reality TV. It’s my guilty pleasure, my stress relief and, strangely enough, a lens through which I’ve begun to view the world around me.Somewhere between a dramatic tribal council on “Survivor” and a petty feud over frosting on “The Great British Bake Off,” an idea hit me. What if local government operated like a reality show? I don’t mean metaphorically. I mean full-blown, cameras rolling, alliances forming, “you’re off the committee” level theatrics.Maybe I’ve spent too much time staying up late watching these shows. Or maybe, after so much time being spent covering city meetings, candidate forums and voter turnout percentages, my brain needed a lighter way to process it all.
