New COVID variant renews health threat

Stock markets fell last week on news of a new COVID-19 variant, Omicron. South African authorties and scientists revealed a new, fast-moving variant had been found. They deserve credit. Instead, countries reacted with the punishing imposition of travel restrictions. The move could cause other countries to delay truthful health reports, which would be unfortunate. Even so, restrictions are needed to reduce Omicron’s spread. As of Monday in America, 59.5% of all adults had received full vaccinations to protect themselves and others from getting the deadly disease, but that is not enough. Vaccinations, like smoking bans, should be considered necessary for everyone who mixes with other people. The need to vaccinate is reminiscent of those thoughtful smokers who have accepted smoking bans in restaurants and other places graciously.
