ES girls grapplers edge Marshall in thriller
Excelsior Springs went down to the wire with Marshall last week in girls wrestling.
The Tigers edged the Owls 42-26 in the Jan. 26 road dual. Sophomore Izabella Morgan gave Excelsior Springs a 6-0 lead by pinning Milandi Linares in the third period of the 105-pound match. The Owls, however, took the lead with wins by forfeit at 110 and 115 because the Tigers were open at both weights.
Amaiya McClintock pinned Jaylenn Hudlemeyer in the third period at 120 to make it 18-6 Marshall.
And then, Excelsior Springs made a comeback.
It started with junior Alyssa Betts securing a cradle and a pin 28 seconds into the 125 match. The Tigers went up 24-18 with back-to-back forfeit wins by senior Vada Burton and junior Bailee Baxter at 130 and 135, respectively.
Marshall knotted it at 24 with a victory by Ayla Castaneda at 140. Castaneda pinned Gabby Scrivener, a first-year high schooler at Excelsior Springs, in the second period.
The Tigers reclaimed the lead at 145. Excelsior Springs sophomore Lauren Park found herself in a back-and-forth match before pinning Mareli Adrade-Gonzales at 3 minutes, 59 seconds.
Excelsior Springs secured the dual victory with wins by first-year high schoolers Aryana Davis and Adrien Crawley. Davis pinned Olivia Martin in 37 seconds at 155. Crawley won by forfeit at 170 because Marshall was open at that weight.
The Owls cut the final margin to six points with back-to-back forfeit wins at 190 and 235. Sherlyn Solano was the winner at 190. Joanna Solano was the winner at 235.
At press time, the Tigers were scheduled for a dual Wednesday at Raytown South. They’re scheduled for tournament competition Saturday at Winnetonka, Missouri State High School Activities Association information states.
