EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Tigers ran into a buzz saw Sept. 15. That night, they hosted defending Class 3 District 16 champion Maryville. The Spoofhounds were undefeated entering the non-conference meeting – and they stayed undefeated, sweeping Excelsior Springs in a best-of-five match. Maryville jumped out to a 13-1 lead in the first set and never looked back, finishing with a 25-7 win. During the second set, the Spoofhounds used the intense attack that had allowed them to claim the momentum in the first set and capitalized on Excelsior Springs’ unforced errors to take control. When they were able to defend against the Maryville attack, the Tigers struggled with hitting their shots. Eventually, they fell 25-11. The final set turned out differently for the Tigers, who kept it close most of the way before eventually dropping to the Spoofhounds 25-18.
