Excelsior Springs needed just one more victory to clinch its latest district boys soccer title at press time.With their drubbing of Benton of St. Joseph Monday at Chillicothe, the Tigers were set to play Maryville for the Class 2 District 8 Tournament title Thursday, also at Chillicothe.The win over Benton followed a 1-1 final week of the regular season. Excelsior Springs opened that week with a 3-2 loss to Smithville Oct. 28 and a 10-2 hammering of Grandview Oct. 30, both at Tiger Stadium.The Tigers fell behind 3-0 in their loss to Smithville, with the Warriors scoring in the 36th, 37th and 52nd minutes. Senior Jake Zapata booted in a penalty kick in the 62nd minute to spoil Smithville’s bid for a shutout.
