Tigers growl early, often in district rout of St. Joe Lafayette
ST. JOSEPH – The Tigers continued their recent habit of scoring early, and often, in their Class 4 District 8 Tournament semifinal meeting with St. Joseph Lafayette.
Bolting out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead, Excelsior Springs cruised to a 54-20 victory Nov. 5 at Alumni Stadium. The victory put the Tigers at 7-2 entering their district title meeting with topseeded Smithville Friday at Smithville.
It took just two plays for junior quarterback Chance Moreland to break through the line for a 57-yard run TD run. Sophomore Kylor Meek’s extrapoint kick made it 7-0 with 11 minutes, 7 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Tigers then recovered the ensuing kickoff at the Lafayette 40-yard line to set up senior running back Amani Robinson’s 40-yard TD run with 10:57 remaining. The point-after attempt failed.
