Tigers own jamboree with Kearney, FCA

On Aug. 22, varsity soccer coach Brett McKenzie and Excelsior Springs’ boys team spent some time practicing set pieces.On Aug. 23, the club saw a payoff to that practice time.Scrimmaging against Kearney in a preseason jamboree at Tiger Stadium, Excelsior Springs senior Brady Schoonover took a free kick in the fifth minute following a foul against Kearney. Schoonover’s kick went deep into the Bulldogs’ 18-yard box, where it was believed to have deflected off the chest of a teammate before going into the net – the first of six total goals the Tigers scored over two 35-minute, singlehalf scrimmages. They downed Kearney 3-0, then outscored Faith Christian Academy 3-1.Set pieces, however, weren’t a major focal point entering the jamboree, according to McKenzie.“Not that set pieces aren’t important, but for the jamboree, most of the game is going to be played with the ball moving and not a set piece,” he said. ?...
