Tigers tamed by Warriors in boys district basketball tourney
SMITHVILLE – Another Excelsior Springs varsity boys basketball season is finished.
The Tigers’ season ended Feb. 27 with an 82-42 road loss to Smithville in the first round of the Class 5 District 16 Tournament.
The Warriors took control during the first quarter. Leading 4-2, they staged a 14-0 run over a four-minute span. Excelsior Springs trailed 22-9 at quarter’s end.
Sparked by a 19-6 run midway through the second quarter, the Warriors outscored the Tigers 32-15 to lead 54-24 at halftime.
Excelsior Springs opened the third quarter with a bucket, but the Tigers could not turn those points into a run. Instead, Smithville outscored Excelsior Springs 18-10 for the quarter. The Warriors then finished off the 40-point romp by edging the Tigers 10-8 the fourth quarter.
Senior Tanner Phillips led Excelsior Springs in scoring with 18 points. Fellow senior Jalen Soria also reached double figures with 10 points.
