Winning, losing streaks characterize 2021 campaign
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The varsity softball season was a series of streaks for the Tigers.
Coach Megan Rawie’s team started the season averaging more than six runs a game through the first 10 ballgames. A trip to the Ozark Tournament, however, halted that scoring tear, as Excelsior Springs got outscored 49-6 while struggling to put the ball in play and went on a 10-game losing streak midway through the season.
That streak ended Sept. 29 with a 3-2 road win over Notre Dame de Sion, a private school in Kansas City. Sparked by the victory, Excelsior Springs won six of its next nine games en route to a second-place finish in the Class 4 District 8 Tournament.
Offensively, Excelsior Springs averaged 5.4 runs per game and hit .278. Junior shortstop Karli Shipman led the Tigers with a .341 batting average, with sophomore pitcher Bailey Carder hitting .326.
