April marks the 20th anniversary of National Donate Life Month, which each year highlights the importance of registering your decision to be a donor, honors deceased and living donors and celebrates the lives they saved. More than 100,000 patients are currently waiting for an organ transplant in the United States, with 1,600 of them being from Missouri.

The annual French Quarter Piccadilly Gala fundraiser was recently held at The Montgomery Event Venue in downtown Excelsior Springs. This year’s Mardi Gras theme had everyone showing up in colorful gold, green and purple festive wear.

Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States, with one in 36 children receiving a diagnosis, according to today’s newly released report from the Centers for Disease Control. In addition to the 5.8 million Autistic adults, this prevalence means that autism likely touches a vast majority of Americans either through relationships or direct experience, and the support needs across the autism spectrum are vastly different. During Autism Acceptance Month, the Autism Society is highlighting the diversity of experiences and needs with a reminder that acceptance happens every day.

Finally, the Excelsior Springs varsity boys tennis team gets to stay home for a while. As of this writing, the Tigers were slated to begin a slate of six home duals and a home tournament, starting with Tuesday’s meeting with Harrisonville.

Excelsior Springs had 11 champions to show for its first varsity track and field meet this season. Competing on March 30 at the Chillicothe Early Season Invitational, the Tigers won seven boys events and four girls events.

Excelsior Springs was seeking to return to the win column in varsity girls soccer when this week started. Entering Tuesday’s home meeting with Independence-based Van Horn, the Tigers were 1-3 with a two-game losing streak.
