Council OKs work schedule, OT changes at PD

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Police officers have one shorter shift to work every two weeks. Heeding Chief Clint Reno’s recommendation, the City Council passed an ordinance March 1 to start a police officer’s overtime pay once that officer has worked 80 hours over two weeks. The ordinance took effect Sunday. Officers, paid biweekly, had to work 84 hours to begin receiving overtime before this week. Generally, police officers work 12-hour shifts. The system has been in place since 2013, Reno estimated. To cap regular pay at 80 hours, “officers will just work a short day sometime during the two-week period – they will only work eight hours instead of 12,” he told city leaders. Approving the ordinance puts officers “on a level playing field” with other department employees who work 80 hours over two weeks, such as investigation personnel and school resource officers, Reno said.
