RICHMOND – Coronavirus cases across Clay and Ray counties continue to mount, as is happening across the state and nation.

In Clay County, the number of cases reported since the outbreak began stood Thursday morning at 4,439, with 57 people dead, based on numbers from the Clay County and Kansas City health departments.

Outside of the city, Clay County has experienced 1,947 cases and 42 deaths. The total population of Clay County is 250,000.

In rural Ray County, population 23,000, the health department reports there have been 191 confirmed cases of COVID-19 from the start of the outbreak, with 22 cases still active. Two deaths have occurred.

Statewide, 141,000 out of 6.1 million people have contracted the virus. Of that number, 2,334 people have died.

In answer to this newspaper’s question about why he has not required a statewide mask mandate. Gov. Mike Parson in August said doing so was not necessary, as some counties have only had only five cases. As of Thursday, no county has reported fewer than 21 cases.

Nationally, nearly 212,000 people have died.
