Excelsior council OKs stipends in support of chamber, DEP

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Excelsior Partnership have some extra money to assist business and for community promotion during the coronavirus pandemic. On Sept. 21, the City Council granted the chamber $75,000 as a Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act-related stipend. Economic Development Director Melinda Mehaffy told the council the money would help cover lost revenue, personal protective equipment and remarketing. Much of the money, $52,900, would go toward “business interruption” costs, Mehaffy said. Another $5,600 would go toward “public safety measures, which includes a $5,000 stipend for handwashing systems that can be used in our community at community events,” she said. In addition, Mehaffy said $11,500 would help cover unemployment expenses caused by the pandemic.
