New school year starts for Excelsior Springs
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The first day of the last year at Westview Elementary School found Hunter Happy, 9, walking with his mother, Kayla Happy, to the door.
He wore a camouflage mask, and matching clothes. Typical of many youngsters, Hunter said he considered the first day “boring.” He talked instead about what he did earlier.
“Last night, I was playing with Legos. I was playing with my sister,” Hunter said.
Upon reflection, Hunter decided school friends are good, too.
“I play kickball most of the time (at recess) and run around,” he said.
Kayla said she is glad to walk Hunter into school. She works as a paraprofessional teacher for the district.
“It gets me out of the house,” she said.
At the door, Elisha Dale stands ready to receive students.
When Arielle Heather arrives with her son, Grayson Heather, 6, Dale hands Arielle a registration form for the child-care program. Dale takes Grayson’s temperature, too.
“All of the kids will get their temperatures read before they get to…
