Life in the cupholder
Some guarantees in life are unavoidable: taxes will come regardless of preparedness, Missouri weather will unpredictably include all four seasons within a week and if anything goes wrong in my life, my mother will probably blame it on energy drinks.
Headache? Too many energy drinks. Upset stomach? Energy drinks. Stub my toe on the corner of the couch? Probably weakened by energy drinks somehow.
I could walk outside and get struck by lightning and she would probably shake her head and say, “That’s all those energy drinks you consume.” The funny thing is, my mother probably is not entirely wrong to be concerned. I drink an unreasonable amount of Red Bull daily.
Most mornings start the same way. Before the day begins, my mind is already busy with a mental checklist: meetings, interviews, emails, phone calls, unfinished stories, photos to edit and in the midst of it all, remembering things like school papers, laundry or whether dinner ingredients were prepared.
