ES girls hoopsters end skid, then end season in districts
The Tigers ended their losing streak in varsity girls basketball in district play.
They also ended their season in district play. By opening the Class 4 District 15 Tournament with 70-13 thumping of Northeast of Kansas City Feb. 28, Excelsior Springs snapped a 12-game losing streak dating back to Jan. 12, when the Tigers lost on the road to Winnetonka. On March 2, however, Excelsior Springs fell to eventual tournament champion and tournament host St. Pius X of Kansas City 74-26.
Excelsior Springs took control of Northeast with a 20-point first quarter and a 24-point second quarter, leading 44-5 at halftime. A 26-8 second half finished off the Tigers’ highest scoring output this season.
Defense fueled the offense. The Tigers turned 33 Northeast turnovers into 41 points. They also scored 58 points in the paint.
