ES varsity boys drop two at Richmond Winter Classic

RICHMOND – The Excelsior Springs varsity boys basketball team got in some more game reps last week. The ballclub, which has had some gaps in its schedule this season because of the pandemic, played in two Richmond Winter Classic games, falling to Wellington-Napoleon 64-30 Jan. 27 and to Richmond 69-34 Jan. 28. In the first game, Wellington-Napoleon jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. Wellington-Napoleon led 14-8 after one quarter. Excelsior Springs scored the first basket of the second quarter to cut the margin to 14-10 but could get no closer. Wellington-Napoleon went on a 21-2 second-quarter run, leading 39-18 at halftime. Wellington-Napoleon started the second half with an 8-0 run over the first three minutes of the third quarter and went on to outscore Excelsior Springs 18-8 that quarter. Wellington-Napoleon edged Excelsior Springs 7-4 the final quarter. Tanner Phillips led Excelsior Springs in scoring with 16 points. Sophomore Brendan Blackburn scored eight…
