Mineral Water Bowl no-go in 2020; return in ’21 possible

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – For almost 30 years, the Mineral Water Bowl has been a mainstay in Excelsior Springs. But not this year. Generally, the annual football game – currently a showcase for NCAA Division II schools – is played the first Saturday in December. In July, however, the Excelsior Springs Quarterback Club announced that this year’s game was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mineral Water Bowl and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference have a contractual agreement to bring a non-playoff team from the NSIC to Excelsior Springs to play in the game. On Aug. 13, the NSIC elected to cancel its 2020 football season, putting the Mineral Water Bowl Committee in a position where it had to cancel the game. “Just about every Division II conference in the country decided to cancel their season, with only two conferences playing a limited number of games,” committee member Roger Siegel said.
