Tigers drop two in their own tourney

Until Monday’s meeting with Winnetonka, Excelsior Springs was on a losing streak in varsity boys soccer. Before getting their 7-0 road win over the Griffins, the Tigers lost three straight, including two last week in their own tournament at Tiger Stadium. They lost 3-2 to Maryville Sept. 7 and 2-1 to Smithville Sept. 9. “We haven’t played the way we want to yet for a full 80 minutes,” coach Zac Ganzer said. The Tigers, who had a first-round bye, met Maryville in the tournament semifinals. Senior Mason Wartner’s goal in the 15th minute gave Excelsior Springs the opening lead. Maryville tied it in the 19th minute and then took the lead in the 38th. The Spoofhounds scored their final goal in the 54th minute. Junior Jake Zapata finished an assist pass from Wartner in the 75th minute to complete the scoring. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaxon Hellyer had seven saves for Excelsior Springs.
