Tigers take third at ’Tonka
KANSAS CITY – The Excelsior Springs varsity boys soccer team got its first road trip out of the way last week.
Playing in the Winnetonka Tournament, the Tigers visited the Staley High School and District Athletic Complex, where they placed third.
Excelsior Springs open Sept. 1 by winning an overtime thriller 4-3. The Tigers got an early goal from senior Rudy DeLeon, courtesy of junior Ethan Edwards’ assist pas DeLeon then made it 2-0 by finishing a ball from freshman Mason Wartne
The Griffins cut the Excelsior Springs lead to 2-1. The Tigers made it 3-1 with a goal by Wartne assisted by DeLeon.
But the lead was not safe, as the Tigers gave up two second-half goals, including the equalizer with 47 seconds left in regulation.
DeLeon concluded his hat trick by putting in the game-winner in overtime.
From there, Excelsior Springs faced the No. 1 seed, Lincoln Prep, Sept. 2. Sophomore goalie Braxton Moffett made five saves.
