Tough D produces no W’s for Tigers in varsity boys soccer

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Over the past two weeks of the varsity boys soccer season, defense has kept the Tigers in games. Last week, however, the Tigers struggled on offense. And in doing so, they failed to win. On Sept. 29, Excelsior Springs hosted Oak Grove in a defensive battle, falling 1-0. The Tigers were stymied early offensively and took a hit when their leading goal scorer, senior Rudy DeLeon, went down with an ankle injury in the fifth minute. The Panthers scored the game-winner in the 13th minute. Sophomore goalie Braxton Moffett made six total saves for Excelsior Springs. On Oct. 1, Smithville visited Tiger Stadium for a non-conference matchup that had a defensive feel like the Oak Grove game. Moffett made nine saves to help keep it goalless through regulation and two overtime periods to send it into a penalty kick shootout.
