The Excelsior Springs Police Department reported the following arrests handled recently by the department. Sunday, September 10 At 1:00 p.m., Amber Latta, 38, was arrested fo stealing – all other larceny.

New pumper truck inducted

The Excelsior Springs Fire Department (ESFD) recently conducted a wetting ceremony in order to commemorate and bless their new fire truck, Pumper Two. Fire Chief Joe Maddick described the ceremony as a tradition that began during the horse-drawn era after firemen would return to the station.

City property tax rollback approved in city budget

Excelsior Springs’ 2024 municipal budget will reflect a 5.5% tax decrease in property taxes while keeping true to the city council’s top five priorities. Molly McGovern, city manager, said the a decrease in property reassessments means a decrease in tax rates.

O’Dell Cabin to receive dedication

The Osage Daughters of the American Colonist (DAC) will honor Lettis Clevenger O’Dell with a dedication ceremony at the O’Dell Cabin at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Golf Course Pavilion, located at 1201 Golf Hill Drive.

Transportation safety matters to ES school district

Excelsior Springs First Student Transportation Director Kim Green and Safety and Security Director Jeff Kimsey make it their mission to keep Excelsior Springs students safe on and off the bus. Green described each bus in the district transporting between 40 to 60 students at a time and said, “Buses are full, weighing 15 tons fully loaded.” She pointed out that policies, such as staying out of the danger zone, being aware of the surroundings, not eating or drinking and reducing horseplay, can keep students safe.

Chronic wasting disease documented in Clay and Ray counties

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected among the whitetail deer populations in 31 Missouri counties, including Clay and Ray. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) urges hunters and other area residents to look for diseased animals and advises hunters to be aware of regulations that apply to CWD management areas.

DESE launches program to ‘Close the Gap’ for eligible students

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Odyssey recently announced the launch of the Missouri Close the Gap Grant program. Odyssey, a platform helping states connect to families in order to help find funding for education expenses in partnership with DESE and is offering families with students who reside in Missouri a one-time grant of up to $1,500 for education costs.

“Taking Care of You” class comes to ES

The Taking Care of You stress management program - a series of 45-minute sessions for middle- and highschool students - is held at the Excelsior Springs Community Center (ESCC) every Tuesday at 2 p.m. through Oct. 17. The program was developed by the University of Missouri (MU) Extension to teach individuals of middle school and high school age how to manage stress.

Excelsior Springs (ES) Hospital shared the organization’s ongoing growth with Chamber of Commerce members during this month’s Chamber of Commerce networking luncheon. As a sponsor, ES Hospital provided lunch from the hospital café.
