Instructional changes and expanded student support systems are beginning to show results at Excelsior Springs Middle School after what administrators describe as a year of significant change. Excelsior Springs Middle School Principal Anneliese Gould outlined those efforts during a recent presentation to the Excelsior Springs Board of Education, where she shared an overview of the building’s focus on strengthening instruction, improving accountability and building consistent systems for both students and staff during the 2025–26 school year.

A new detainee housing agreement between Excelsior Springs and the county will more than double the daily cost of housing municipal inmates at the Clay County Detention Center. Excelsior Springs City Council approved the agreement during a recent meeting after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office terminated the previous municipal housing memorandum with the Excelsior Springs Police Department.

A series of updates to Excelsior Springs’ personnel policies will eliminate several employee leave buyouts and make administrative changes affecting workplace procedures and employee benefits. Excelsior Springs City Council members approved the revisions during a recent meeting following an annual review of the city’s personnel policies conducted by staff and a personnel policy review committee representing multiple departments.

Families in Excelsior Springs will soon have another opportunity to participate in the Strengthening Families 10-14 Program as Substance Abuse Free Environments (SAFE) relaunches the evidence-based initiative designed to strengthen family relationships while addressing youth substance use prevention.

Excelsior Springs City Council members recently tabled a zoning amendment, which would have allowed drive-through services at marijuana dispensaries. The proposal drew public comment during the visitors’ portion of the meeting, where two speakers urged council members not to move forward with the amendment.

For many students at Lewis Elementary, the library serves not only as a place to borrow books but also as a space for additional support with math and reading, exploring new stories and gaining encouragement throughout the school day. The legal showdown over which city controls contested land west of Excelsior Springs is advancing to trial after a Clay County judge ordered a three-day bench proceeding. The case centers on competing annexation measures approved by voters in Excelsior Springs and Mosby in November 2025 that seek to incorporate overlapping portions of unincorporated Clay County land west of the city limits, primarily along Cameron Road and Rhodus Road.

With 894 students scheduled to take state-required End of Course Exams, the Excelsior Springs High School (ESHS) Key Club is working to ensure classmates walk into testing carrying more than sharpened pencils and study guides. Through a community-wide donation effort, the student-led organization hopes to place a goody bag filled with encouragement into the hands of every student this spring.
