Jail tax opponent offers his opinion that ballot issue not good enough

This is a reminder to take on the responsibility to come out next Tuesday, Aug. 3, and vote no on the jail sales tax proposal. A no vote is simply sending the message to our commissioners and sheriff that the proposed idea to replace our current jail, which has many issues that need addressing, is not what we want. It is oversized for our county needs in capacity and costs. It saddles the folks that spend money in Ray County, especially Richmond, with the costs. There was no study on the impact of this proposal on other services, i.e., the hospital, utilities, the economy. There appears to be no outside oversight. No forecast has been given for an operations budget for the new facility. It is a prison-for-profit scheme. That is not our government’s job. Send the message to go back and do a thorough job of studying, contemplating, including input from citizens, businesses and city leaders and develop a solid plan first.
