Baseballers ‘cruising along O.K.’ early in season
Excelsior Springs was “cruising along O.K.” after two weeks of varsity baseball, according to coach Aaron Holst.“Offensively, I feel like we’re farther ahead than where I maybe expected, or deemed, we would be at this point,” Holst said March 29 after a home triangular with Benton of St. Joseph and Willard. “That’s a great thing.”Being 5-3 through the first two weeks also might have influenced the veteran skipper’s opinion. Those five wins included a sweep of the Excelsior Springs Tournament – Holst’s last regular-season home tournament as a coach. Per a recent report in The Standard, Holst has announced his retirement at the end of the school year.The boys started their tournament sweep by thumping North Kansas City 9-0 March 24. They then rallied to edge Savannah 11-9 March 26 – or as Holst described it, “the exciting one of the week.”“In hindsight, I’m glad our guys had to dig their way out,” he said....
